Description

My tasting notes on the 1986 Beaucastel reveal alarming irregularity. The wine has gone through numerous stages, but I have concluded that this wine continues to perform less well than it did during its first 3-4 years of life. All my recent notes have indicated a leanness, toughness, and excessive austerity without the fruit, flesh, and fat necessary to give the wine balance. The last bottle from my cellar exhibited a healthy dark ruby/purple color, a muted aromatic profile (some dust, earth, and red fruits did finally emerge), and a tough, tannic, hard personality. The color remains sound, but the wine is closed, tannic, and uninspiring. Although I disagree with them, the Perrin brothers believe the wine needs more time and will re-emerge from its current state of dormancy.
