Description

When one compares 1998 with 1999 in Hermitage,it is less evident as to which vintage prevails.Certainly the 1999s appear to have sweeter tannin, greater phenolic ripeness, and more opulent, voluptuous textures. In 1999 the style of wines range from those with extraordinary elegance to wines of fabulous richness, opulence and intensity.
The 1999 Hermitage Le Greal achieved 13.3% natural alcohol. If the 1998 ia a modern day clone of the 1978,perhaps the 1999 will be thought of a modern day representative of the 1979.The dense purple-colored 1999 offers a beautiful nose of cassis and blackberry fruit, medium to full body, superb concentration, moderately high tannin, good acidity and a long 30+second finish.Like the 1998 Le Greal, there is a Medoc-like austerity in the back end,but the 1999 does not have quite the power, concentration and viscosity of the 1998.Nevertheless,it is a superb example of Hermitage that should have at least two decades of evolution.Anticipated maturity:2007-2023.
(90-94 Points).
