Description

FOR SALE: ONE BOTTLE OF CHATEAU D'YQUEM 1ER GRAND CRU CLASSE SAUTERNES

This extremely rare and almost legendary bottle is being sold in excellent condition for its age; with the bottle, label, capsule and cork, all perfectly acceptable for being 90 years old. You will of course note that this bottle is indeed a Van der Muelen negociant bottle. The chateau used VDM as negociants a handful of times during the early part of the 20th century. 1928 was the last time I believe. And the majority of surviving bottles from the 1921 vintage are indeed VDM bottles.

1921 is often described in oenological circles as being an almost immortal vintage for d'Yquem. Parker frequently includes it as being one of the greatest d'Yquem vintages ever, along with the 1811, 1847, 1937 and 2001 and raves about it even now - as follows:

Tasting Notes Robert Parker 100
There is no doubt that the two most profound and mature Yquem made in the twentieth century were the 1921 (rated 100 on two separate occasions..) and the 1937.

Richard Olney
From Yquem by R. Olney. Often characterized as the greatest white wine of the century. "Suave, seductive, exotic liqueur-like aroma of candied fruits with floral touches, a scent of peppery yellow roses. Sumptuous, enveloping warmth. Ripe, complex palate. Rich in savours with spicy overtones and mouth vapours recalling green chartreuse, the ensemble contained by a remarkable overall homogeneity conferring upon the wine an aura of timelessness"( Robert Goffard, 1984)

Wine Spectator 97
"With its brilliant orange-amber color, this is a truly elegant wine that balances its sweetness and flavors on a razor edge. The finish has apricot, vanilla, pear, toast, fig, tobacco and coffee. Amazingly complex for its seemingly delicate style, yet it sacrifices no sweetness."

And the ever-reliable Cellar Tracker;

Community Tasting Notes (average 95.5 pts. and median of 95 pts. in 3 notes)

Value wise, a bottle of 1921 d'Yquem is available from around £4200-£8700 here in the UK (ex VAT prices). It is assumed that these are chateau bottles. It is also fair to assume that VDM bottles are indeed comfortably cheaper. My reserve and buy it now price more than accommodates this and is I believe, very fair and generous indeed.

The bottle will be sent very securely packaged and fully insured on receipt of cleared funds. Alternatively, collection in person would also be welcome. As would any inspection prior to bidding. I would be happy to send any pictures to you too - in case you wished to see the bottle in greater clarity.

Please note; if paying via Paypal, 3.5% will be added to the final invoice to cover Paypal's modest charges.

Please ask me any questions you have. Please also see my other bottles for sale - including such luminary bottles of 1945, 1947 and 1950 Petrus in similarly excellent condition.
