Description

Georges Puig, a tall, languid, young man has 110 hectares, largely of Grenache – noir, gris and blanc – and Carignan around the village of Passa. The vineyards were originally planted in 1446, but success and wealth came with the arrival of the railway in the 19th century, both to be dashed by the onset of phylloxera in 1878. Most of the vineyard had to be replanted. Georges seems to be fatigued by the weight of his family history, by the precious stocks of what in the thirties use to be called “Grand Roussillon” stretching back to 1875, and still in barrel, with further stocks of many of the 20th century vintages, such as 1945, waiting in vat to top up the barrels. Perhaps we should explain how this all works: the wines, made from Carignan and Grenache, are fortified with alcohol, much in the way of Port, and then aged indefinitely in vats of various descriptions. The crucial juncture is when they are put into wood - oak and chestnut of all sizes up to demi-muids. The environment of each of these century old barrels determines by its bacteria the evolution of the wine, which is at this stage just old sweet wine without huge interest. The effect is twofold: one evaporation, and thereby concentration, two the rise of volatile acidity. The nearest point of comparison is to Palo Cortado Sherry or Madeira. All these wines are pure vintage, not Solera, although Georges will use the remaining “mother” wine from the 19th century barrels to create some Solera wines for the future. The “Grand Roussillon” is available in minuscule volume. The nectar is poured into 37.5cl bottles, before being corked and waxed by hand.

Very perfumed: nutmeg, raspberry, floral –stocks- this is intense with a creamy parma violet palate. Fabulous.
