Description

The legendary '66 Latour.

A good clean example with a full crisp label and embossed capsule.
Level as per photo - High Shoulder - commensurate with age.

Wine Advocate #129 Jun 2000 Robert M. Parker, Jr. 96 Drink: 2000 - 2020 $550-$2000
The wine of the vintage, the 1966 Latour is a classic, old style Bordeaux that has required decades to become drinkable. A dark, opaque garnet colour is followed by a fabulous nose of cedar, sweet leather, black fruits, prunes, and roasted walnuts, refreshing underlying acidity, sweet but noticeable tannin, and a spicy finish. This powerful, vigorous, immensely impressive, concentrated Latour has reached its plateau of maturity, where it will remain for another 10-20 years.

...and two rather more recent notes from Neal Martin

Tasted at The Sampler in South Kensington. The Latour ’66 remains one of the great wines of the vintage. This bottle has a lovely, fresh bouquet that continues to scream “Pauillac” at the top of its voice. Pencil lead, cedar, dark berried fruits, a touch of tar with exceptional definition and focus. The palate is very well balanced with stern, rigid tannins, very foursquare but excellent depth and penetration. There is a saline tang lingering on the grippy, stout, conservative but citrus fresh finish. Excellent and upstanding. Tasted December 2010.

Wine Journal Jul 2009 Neal Martin 95 Drink 2009 - 2015
Tasted blind at The Arches in London. This Latour ’66 is just how I remember it in 2004. It has a masculine, cedar and tobacco scented nose with extraordinary definition and clarity. With time that graphite aroma becomes more pronounced, there is an aloofness about this wine. The palate is medium-bodied but tannic, foursquare, a Pauillac that demands to be taken seriously. Yet still fresh with great purity on the finish with blackberry, cedar, cigar box and smoke. This aristocratic Latour displays immense persistency towards the finish. Magnificent. Drink now-2015+ Tasted February 2009.
