Description

The Rheingau is a wine producing area that lies west of the Rhine river, near Wiesbaden. In 1775 the first Spatlese was pressed in the Rheingau from grapes infested with noble rot.
This wine's make up has probably got a large element of noble rot (botrytis) in it,because the 1971 vintage in the Rheingau is considered the greatest vintage in living memory.
Robert Parker gave the 1971 vintage a 98 Point rating,a score that has never been achieved since in Germany.
This wine should be very opulent, with a honied richness, combined harmoniously with acidity and minerality. The complexity and high acidity should mean that it has developed slowly as Spatleses from a good vintage normally take many years to mature.
