Description

91 points Wine Spectator:
"Garnet rim. A big, rich, ripe, generous yet tannic claret with fragrant tar cedar, ripe cassis and tobacco flavors. Not ready yet, but showing good evolution. Should be a lovely, classic wine in a few years, but can be drunk now.--Gruaud-Larose vertical." Feb 1991

Recent CellarTracker user note:
Tasted by Paul S on 12/18/2010 & rated 93 points: 30-40-50 Dinner (Music and Wines of the 1960s, 70s and 80s) (Bounce, Iluma): I thought this was very good. Nose was tight, showing leafy tobacco notes and some coffee beans along with little hints of dark fruit - quite nice, and very similar to the 1970 Poyferre actually. The palate was far more alive though. Cleanly concentrated, it showed black olives, pure, juicy transparent cassis notes and a long finish of tobacco and damp leafiness. Rich and delicious, yet supremely balanced, this was probably drinking at peak. Not one for those who like their wines modern and shiny - this was a typically rustic Gruaud Larose, but I found it a gorgeous wine for its vintage and one of the best clarets amongst a very strong line-up.
