1990 Prince Poniatowski Vouvray Clos Baudoin

The Clos Baudoin is never labeled bearing the traditional sweetness levels, he prefers to allow the vintage to dictate what the wine will be and leave it at that. The 1990 would be labeled as Moelleux as the warmth and richness of this great vintage is evident in the wine, tempered by the naturally fruity acidity and 17 years age, this comes across as elegant, soulful and fresh. Give this bottle a little time to get going, say 30 minutes in a decanter and it will reward you with layers of honeyed citrus, ginger and floral notes that dance atop the soil inflected palate. The Poniatowski family has farmed the Clos Baudoin since 1918, now like many before them they will pass it on. A few years ago the Prince Poniatowski sold his interests in Vouvray to up and comer Francois Chidaine of Montlouis and they are now completing the ownership change for good. We have enjoyed older wines held in the cellars of the Clos Baudoin that the Prince has been dolling out to his clients around the world but sadly the time have come for it all to end. What we are offering here are the very last wines to come from the Clos Baudoin during the Poniatowski period. We purchased all we could and I will be personally stashing some away to remember a bygone day. The wines have come directly from the cellars in Vouvray and are in pristine condition.

The 1990 is amazing,elegant perfume was rich with notes of jasmine and gardenia, Granny Smith apple and gingery spice. On the palate the wine was creamy and soft, slowly revealing layers of tart apple, poached pear and orange zest. The wine finished with a subtle hint of limestone minerality.
