Description

The spectacular 1998 Beaucastle Chateauneuf du Pape includes more Grenache (40%) in the final blend,as well as 20% Mourvedre,10% Syrah,10% Conoise, and the balance from other authorized grape varietals. It is an explosively rich, remarkably flattering Beaucastle, even after bottling. Most Beaucastles have a tendency to shut down completely and not re-emerge for 6-10 years.Bottled early in the summer, the 1998 is flamboyant,no doubt because of the larger than normal percentage of Grenache. It boasts explosive richness, thick, juicy blackberry and kirsch, smoke, licorice, roasted meats, and truffles. The acidity seems low(analytically it is the same as the 1999),and the wine fat,full-bodied,and intense. It will be hard to stay away from this wine, even though it will evolve for 25-30 years.Could it turn out to be similar to the 1981,rather than the 1989?
(95 Points).

Robert Parker. (Parker's Wine Buyer's Guide Sixth Edition).

In a more recent revue of this wine(written approx.2004) Parker uprated Beaucastle 1998 to 96 Points:-

The 1998 is unquestionably one of the great modern-day Beaucastles.Very full-bodied,intense,with surprisingly supple tannin, this is a more forward style, but with great longevity. Anticipated maturity: now-2031.
(96 Points).

Robert Parker. (The World's Greatest Wine Estates).
