1998 is a great vintage that continues to build in stature and majesty.When I first reported on these wines I indicated it was the finest vintage since 1990.However,it is better than 1990,producing wines with extraordinary balance.Multiple tastings of the 1998 Chateauneuf du Pape's out of bottle (I bought as much as I could afford)have proven these wines have gained amazing weight and richness,surpassing even their pre-bottling conditions.This is a profound,possibly once-in-a-lifetime vintage to buy in quantity.Moreover,these wines will drink well young or can be cellared 15-20+ years.
The extraordinary Chateauneuf du Pape,Cuvee Etienne Gonnet is one of the vintage's blockbusters.The saturated ruby/purple color is accompanied by aromas of creme de cassis,licorice,lavender,truffles and spice.The wine is unctuously textured,with great richness,huge levels of glycerin,extraordinary purity,and a finish that lasts nearly 40 seconds.This is a sexy,disarmingly enjoyable Chateauneuf du Pape that will get even better over the next decade and will last for 15-18 years.
