Description

Mauro Mascarello has been running this estate since 1967 and in 1989 he bought Santo Stefano,a single iron-rich vineyard in the Perno hamlet of Monforte d'Alba.The 1999 vintage for this wine appeared to need several years to soften its hard edges and should now be drinking extremely well:-

"Mauro Mascarello loves the 1999 vintage,but notes that the wines are a bit tough and hard to taste today.They're more structured than the 1998s,he adds,but also rich and fat".
"The Santo Stefano di Perno is medium amber-red.Classic autumnal Barolo aromas of smoke,earth,dried flowers and camphor.Tough and tightly wound today,with a hint of old barrel contributing to the impression of dryness".

"The 1999 Barolo Santo Stefano,a dark garnet with a penetrating nose of raisins,chocolate,tobacco,and black cherries,is sweet and jammy on the palate with a licorice/tar finish.It too is tightly knit and will need some time to shed a few tannins. Anticipated maturity: 2006-2016".
