Description

"From the site that generally buds earliest but gets picked latest (its deep marl cools the roots down, forcing the grapes to take their time,- speculates Humbrecht), the 2004 Pinot Gris Clos Jebsal Vendange Tardive represents a break after eleven consecutive vintages of S.G.N. The vintner should count him- or herself lucky who gets a break like this! An amazing concentration of apricot nectar, lemon, marzipan, and honey is allied to pungent buckwheat and an explosively perfumed bouquet of flowers in a dazzling aromatic display that made me think: “Tokay - Tokaji? ... Pinot Gris - Furmint?!- Not terribly sweet (at 68 grams residual sugar) nor at all warm (at 14% alcohol), this penetrates with take-no-prisoners length, and should be worth returning to at any time over the next two decades. Furthermore, for all of its remarkable virtues, it's easier to appreciate this as wine and to imagine its evolution than is the case with many of its record-setting S.G.N. predecessors."

Wine Advocate 95 points

"In the glass it has a shimmering, fairly rich but very bright golden hue betraying the sweetness that this cuvée carries. The nose is evocative and very expressive, as we should perhaps expect from Zind Humbrecht. There is an intense richness, redolent of tropical fruit salad, with a honeyed sweetness. Layered on top of this there is a very forward note of smoky bacon, together with nuances of white pepper and ginger. This very expressive aromatic profile is more than matched by a great presence on the palate, sweet and full and very broad, with fleeting moments of tangerine zest mixed in with the rich flavours of brioche, lemons and star fruit, backed up by a fine skeleton comprising a lightly grippy structure and with a vibrant acidity alongside. The rolling finish is long and perfectly formed, with waves of bitter grip. This is a touch more delicate and light-footed than many Zind Humbrecht wines, reflecting that rather restrained residual sugar, but there is still no shortage of sweetness, flavour and impact here. Delicious."

17.5+/20 (the winedoctor.com, 25 Oct 2010)

"Heady, with loads of honey, apricot and caramel corn notes. Moderately sweet, concentrated and a little raw today, so give it about five years. The aroma is really singing, but the palate needs time to align itself. Best from 2008 through 2020. 430 cases made."
