The old vine cuvee, the 2001 Chateauneuf du Pape Chante Le Merle Vieilles Vignes, exhibits great purity, but it is far more backward than its two siblings. This deep plum/purple-colour effort offers a smorgasbord of aromas, including lavender, ground pepper, currants, cherries, and spice box. The firmness, tannic clout, dense, expansive flavours, and rich, powerful finish are impressive, but patience is warranted. Anticipated maturity: 2006-2015.

Bright, dark red. Highly aromatic nose of raspberry, fruitcake, pepper, leather, licorice and gingerbread. Intensely flavoured and spicy, with youthful flavours of berry skin and pepper. Sharply delineated, firm and peppery, with the structure to age. Still rather tightly wound and in need of at least four or five years of aging. This has turned out well.
