Description

The Age, 13th June 2006: "John Duval, the long-time "custodian" of Grange at Penfolds, left the company in 2002. In his immediate post-Penfolds days Duval was approached by English wine men Esme Johnstone and Martin Krajewski, who are involved in Chateau de Sours in Bordeaux. He chose Hunter-based David Fatches to do the winemaking and Duval as the consultant. The top red - Songlines - would be a McLaren Vale shiraz. So far, so good, except the Songlines brief involved the kind of sophisticated, ethereal expression of McLaren Vale shiraz that is rarely (if ever) seen. The price would be $110. Starting in 2004, Fatches and Duval sourced fruit from vines aged between 40 and 105 years and performed myriad winemaking techniques in containers ranging from one tonne to three tonnes. With Songlines, the duo have taken a blunt tool and refined it almost beyond description. The wine is perfumed, lifted and finely textured with generous but not heavy fruit. It's difficult to imagine a more atypical McLaren Vale shiraz, especially one at 15 per cent alcohol."

James Halliday Wine Companion- 93 points
A solid, medium- to full-bodied very typical McLaren Vale shiraz; abundant blackberry and dark chocolate; persistent but balanced tannins; classy French oak.
