Description

Dirk van der Niepoort is Portugal's most famous winemaker.

Charme is an unusual wine in several respects. The grapes are foot trodden in lagares (large, shallow stone troughs) with the stems, which you’d think would result in a harsh, tannic wine. But Dirk’s view is that foot-treading with stems can actually produce elegant wines, and he cites Domaine de la Romanée Conti as his precedent.

Charme is an elegant wine with mature tannins. Small details make the production of Charme a risky challenge, but it also makes the wine so unique and rare. Small, sheltered vineyards with low production from Vale de Mendiz in the Pinhão valley are the key elements for Charme.
‘It’s the most complicated wine to make on earth,’ he explains. ‘Everything has to be perfect.’ Dirk admits that although ‘it’s a pain in the ass to make, the result is quite nice.’

Nicely elegant, fresh, pure sweet cherry and berry fruit nose. The palate is smooth and super-elegant with lovely freshness and purity. Nice acidity, too. Pretty serious stuff with real purity Jamie Goode 94/100

Elegant, pretty red fruits intermingle with sophisticated spicy oak. It has a lovely silky texture in the mouth with well defined pomegranate fruit that morphs into darker things as it takes more oxygen on board. There is excellent acidity running through the wine and it accentuates the earth and limestone flavours on the finish.
