Description

Scharzhofberger is probably the most famous vineyard of the Saar and is an Ortsteil – meaning it is referred to by only the vineyard name, without the addition of the name of the village where it is located. Thus wines from this site are labeled simply Scharzhofberg, rather than Wiltingen Scharzhofberg, in much the same style as Grand Cru Burgundy.

The vineyard lies along the Praveltsbach stream, a small tributary of the Saar between Wiltingen and Oberemmel. It covers around 70 acres (28ha), although this is distributed among several owners. Oriented to the south and sloping with a gradient of 35-60%, its soil is composed of the usual gray and red slate, with a relatively high proportion of loess too. The wines from this vineyard are very refined and elegant, with penetrating salty mineral tones and very fine-grained acidity. They exhibit legendary ageing potential and retain depth of fruit, even when very mature.

Scharzhofberger, one of the great Mosel vineyard sites, should not be confused with Scharzberg, which is the name of the local grosslage.
