'Bright straw-yellow. Slightly honeyed aromas of white peach, apricot and jasmine. Enters fresh and relatively dry, with delicate acidity framing the white stone fruit and flint flavours. Albert Mann owns parcels at midslope in the Kirrenburg, which is actually separated from the main body of the Schlossberg grand cru, located to the northeast (but the terrain has the same geological origin as the rest of the cru). Maurice Barthelme told me that in 2011 there was a danger of water stress in this sector due to the excellent drainage of the soil. "You couldn't make anything good with yields higher than 30 hectoliters per hectare," he told me.'

This well regarded Alsace domaine is run by two brothers, Maurice and Jacky Barthelmé in the village of Wettolsheim, near Colmar. It’s not a huge operation: they have 22 hectares in all, but five of these are in five different Grand Cru vineyards and a further two are in lieux-dits.

Using the best organic methods, their domaine is guided by rules of art, with carefully controlled yields.
