Description

'The Colonial Estate’s two flagship wines come from their own property. The 2006 Exile was sourced from a single 140-year-old vineyard with the blend consisting of 85% Shiraz, 10% Mourvedre, and 5% Grenache. Opaque purple/black in color, it exhibits a captivating perfume of toasty oak, smoke, black pepper, truffle, blueberry pie, and blackberry liqueur. Complex, silky-textured, and nicely balanced, this layered, lengthy wine will continue to improve over the next 4-6 years and have a drinking window extending from 2013 to 2026.

The Colonial Estate is the Australian project of Englishman and Bordeaux chateau owner Jonathan Maltus. His first vintage in Australia was 2002.'

'This is the premier cuvee from Mr. Dome himself, Jonathan Maltus. A blend of 75% Shiraz, 20% Mourvedre and 5% Grenache, it has a rather broody nose of ripe black plum, macerated black cherries, a touch of hoi sin and melted dark chocolate. This is not a “blockbuster” wine, the palate medium-bodied, rich, toasty and primal but counterpoised with good acidity. It remains unresolved on the finish but bottle age will sort that out. Just a faint tang of orange-zest on the aftertaste. Very good potential. Drink 2015-2025+. Tasted May 2008.'

The Colonial Estate’s approach to making wines in Australia has been French. Handpicking, sorting tables where they sort individual grapes, wooden vats etc: This is what separates The Colonial Estate from most Australian wineries. No expense has been spared with only the finest of winemaking practises being utilised. Brand new French Oak, French bottles, labels etc and flying over Chateau Teyssier’s winemaker for each vintage to produce wines of outstanding stature set them apart from all others.

Sadly, Colonial Estate no longer produces wine so these bottles are likely to become collectables.
