Description

Marcarini is a wonderful family producer in Piemonte. Six generations of the Marcarini family have worked this hard but rewarding terrain, and here is the fruit of that labour!

As with all Barolo, you should expect a paler colour - this is not a deep colour of wine, but should be a medium ruby with some garnet.

This is quite a big boy, especially as the vintage was such a classic. Thus, the tannins will be firm but ripe and the acidity quite high. But these are the traits of a great Barolo. This is something to keep hold of and try over the years as it develops.

We recently tried a 1945 Barolo (Giacomo Conterno) which was still holding up well and was indeed very delicious.

There is no reason a wine like this would not keep for 20-30+ years!

On the other hand, it is good fun to try a Barolo when it is young and then wait again until it is in its middle age.

At this point expect a flavour of dark cherry, leather, earth. Take some time with this in the glass and allow the perfume to seduce you before delving in.

Rated 18/20 on JancisRobinson.com:

"Dark crimson. Very elegant and perfumed. Gentler and softer than some but very delicate and insinuating. Firm and convincing. But not chock full of tannin. Fruit in ascendant."
