Description

The Estate: This most historic of wine castles has been in the Ricasoli family since 1141 and it was the centre and pinnacle of Tuscan wine production from the mid 19th century under the ‘Iron Baron’ Bettino Ricasoli. He not only served as Italy’s prime minister but it was he who proposed the definitive blend of grapes that was adopted for Chianti DOC a century later. The site of the Brolio vineyards is magnificent. The slopes below the castle look south towards Brolio’s ancient enemy Siena. However, in the gloomy wine years of the 1970s and 1980s, the cellars were leased out to industrial producers such as Seagrams and Hardy’s who did their best to bring down Brolio’s once great reputation.

Fortunately Francesco Ricasoli, the great-great-great grandson of the Iron Baron, was able to buy back the property in 1993. At the time operating as a photographer in Florence, he was wise enough to bring in Tuscany’s finest viticultural and oenological consultants, Carlo Ferrini, to oversee production, and Filippo Mazzei of Fonterutoli to advise on production. Together they have restored Brolio to its former glory. As the replanted vineyards have aged, the wines have been getting better and better.

The Wine: 2007 was a warm vintage producing full ripe-flavoured wine and this Brolio is a splendid well-structured example which is lovely now but which will age extremely well. Now to 2015.
