94 points Vinous
Very dark garnet. Ethereal nose of wildflowers, especially lavender. Vibrant, sharply focused flavors of anise, chocolate, coffee and white pepper. Superbly concentrated, with a velvety mouth feel and firm, ripe tannins. A long, mineral-laden finish brings this poised and multidimensional wine to a deeply satisfying close. (EB) (7/2002)

After returning from Vinitaly and having tasted more than 120 different Brunello di Montalcinos from the 1997 vintage, it was exceedingly clear to all of us that one wine stood head and shoulders above all the rest: The Costanti Brunello di Montalcino. One of Montalcino's most storied producers, Andrea Costanti makes wine that shows its terroir first, coupled with depth, power and concentration. The 1997 is naturally full of fruit but balanced and dense, a wine capable of aging several decades. More so than all of the other Brunelli in this vintage it is a wine with more definition, balance, length, muscular focused concentration. Not merely big, but also more nuanced and faceted. So are we saying this is the Holy Grail? Yes. For 1997 Brunello this is THE WINE!!
