Description

Delicious flavour with mouth drying finish. Lovely wine ***** Michael Broadbent

The Châteauneuf-du-Pape 1989 from Château de Beaucastel, Wine Spectator's Wine of the Year in 1991, is considered by many to be a benchmark of quality for the appellation.
Recently, senior editor James Molesworth, lead taster for the wines of the Rhône Valley, had a chance to taste the 1989 non-blind at the domaine. The original review rated the wine at 97 points and the wine has aged well according to Molesworth's recent tasting note posted on WineSpectator.com: "Gorgeous truffle, bacon fat, cedar, shaved vanilla bean and saucisson notes, but the fruit is still fresh, with currant, date and fig flavors followed by a long clove- and sandalwood-infused finish. A great showing, and from half-bottle to boot. Drink now through 2017. 98 points, non-blind."

Château de Beaucastel Châteauneuf du Pape 1989: A similar rich, saturated red-purple hue. This wine seems to have more secondary aromas than the previous two. Quite gamy, even farmyardy. Nevertheless, there is also a floral freshness to the abundance of rich, dark and smoky fruits. On the palate, this is again a charming and fruit-laden wine. Coffee grounds and spice towards the finish, and more spice and a bucketful of tannins on the length. Another wine that will be superb with further bottle age. 18.5+/20 The Wine Doctor

Tasted by oldwines on 9/15/2012 & rated 98 points: Wow! I agree with Jeff Leve on this one....perfectly mature, though with lots of life left. Color is medium garnet with just a hint of brick on the edge. The nose is expansive with rose petals, strawberry, leather, cedar and juniper berry. The mouthfeel is round and velvety smooth. There is a little earthiness but not overpowering, along with red fruits, autumn spices and some vanilla and tea in the aftertaste. This is a wonderful, most sexy wine that seemed to peak at about the three hour mark after double decanting. I've cellared this wine since release and it was in great condition.

Tasted by Jeff Leve on 8/29/2012 & rated 97 points: It's always a roll of the dice with 1989 Beaucastel. Some bottles are so horsey, you'd think you were in a barn or stable. Other bottles have had issues with their corks. But when you taste a clean, well-stored bottle, you're in for a treat. Fortunately, this was a clean bottle! With the perfect amount of earth, garrigue, black cherry, kirsch. strawberry jam and exotic spice and sensuous textures that ended with a long, opulent finish. While this is fully mature, if you waited another decade before popping bottle, it might be even better!

Tasted by Robert Pavlovich on 7/26/2012 & rated 95 points: What a wine...leather and dried fruits on the nose. Very light on its feet, smooth, fresh, delicious. It was like drinking a nice craft beer and a well aged wine at the same time. The fruit, acid, and tannin are so well intertwined at this stage. Creamy texture. Nice full finish.
