Description

Given to me on my wedding day in 2000 and still in the original box it arrived in (complete with all the polystyrene packaging to protect it from damage, heat and cold).
The bottle has been laid on its side, kept either under the stairs or in a wardrobe to avoid any sun, heat and cold (unfortunately I do not have a wine cellar!).
The bottle is still in the original purple paper cover and the bottle is in immaculate condition.

About the wine:
The 1996 Château Lafite Rothschild is a highly regarded vintage, often described as the strongest of the First Growths from that decade (some have said "..the 1996 in unquestionably this renowned estate's greatest wine...") . Reviews consistently highlight its powerful, yet elegant, character with a balance of fruit, tannins, and tertiary notes. It's known for its potential to age beautifully, with some suggesting a drinking window stretching well into the next century.

Detailed Review:
Neal Martin (Vinous):
He describes the 1996 Lafite as "superb" and notes its "backward" nature, with blackberry, cedar, and graphite aromas and a brilliantly balanced palate. He suggests a drinking range of 2025-2065, according to Lea & Sandeman.

Jane Anson (K&L Wines):
She points to the wine's ability to showcase Lafite's reputation, even at 25 years old, with notes of rosebud, truffle, ash, pencil lead, crushed mint, and cassis. She highlights the concentration and balance, as well as the tertiary notes adding gentleness and juice.

Robert Parker (Tastingbook):
He describes the wine as having a thick, ruby/purple color and a "knock-out" nose with lead pencil, mineral, floral, and black currant scents. He notes its power and complexity, and suggests a drinking window of 2012-2050, according to Tastingbook.

Key Characteristics:
Powerful and Complex:
The 1996 Lafite is known for its intense aromas and flavours, as well as its full-bodied structure.
Elegant and Balanced:
Despite its power, the wine maintains a sense of elegance and balance, with well-integrated tannins and acidity.
Ageability:
The wine is considered a long-ager, with critics suggesting it will continue to evolve and improve for many years.
