Description

Chateau Musar is a winemaking estate in Lebanon,founded in the thirties,which makes superlative wines from a blend of Cabernet Sauvignon,Syrah and Cinsault. The wines made here remind me of the best and most complex Chateauneuf-du-Papes.

Robert Parker (Wine Buyers Guide 1988)


This unusual blend of grapes appears to create a far more complex,fragrant wine,with suppleness and finesse,when it is older.Some vintages from the 1960's are still drinking wonderfully.Some people suggest (like Parker) the older wines are similar to Chateauneuf du Pape,other people, like myself and the following notes, compare it to a fine old Burgundy.
The most recent tasting notes that I have been able to
find of these two wines are as follows:-

Chateau Musar 1978

Decanted three hours.Pale and brown in the glass,but holding up nicely.Expressive nose of strawberries,with a bit of barnyard funk.Strawberries and raspberries on the palate,with tart cranberries,straw,burnt sugar and a little bit of mint.Beautiful,feminine,majestic,ethereal--The Grace Kelly of wines.Like velvet in the glass.My friends thought it was a Chambertin. 93 Points.

Chateau Musar 1979

Nose of dried red cherries,baseball glove leather and a little Musar funk,going on with a touch of ash.On the palate,there was more dried cherry,leather,ash,spice and a little dusted cocoa tannins on the back.The mouthfeel got better with air,as it started out being too acidic with a hint of VA notice,but,with air,it became a typical Musar mouthfeel.The finish was above average length.Great end to a great weekend.Bravo Serge! 91 Points
