Description

In quality terms, the 1995 Valandraud is probably the best vintage that this chateau has produced and it has certainly become a benchmark vintage for the chateau.I was lucky enough to taste a bottle with Jean-Luc Thunevin (the original "Bad-Boy" Garagiste) in St.Emilion and was so mightily impressed that I imported a case direct from the vineyard. This wine is now a rarity (selling in the UK at around £500. At the time the Chateau was producing only 600 cases annually.
(Topterroir).

More than any other St.Emilion property,Valandraud has become the micro-treasure sought by billionaire wine collectors around the world.
This splendid 1995 Valandraud ranks with the finest wines proprietor Jean-Luc Thunevin has produced since his debut 1991 vintage. The wine exhibits an opaque purple color and a sensational nose of roasted herbs, black fruits (cherries, currants, and blackberries),and high-class toasty oak (the latter component is more of a nuance than a dominant characteristic).Very concentrated, with layers of fruit, glycerin, and extract, yet seamlessly constructed, this wine continues the stuff of greatness and appears to be the finest Valandraud yet produced. The finish lasts for over 30 seconds. The wine's high tannin is barely noticeable, because of the ripeness and richness of fruit. Anticipated maturity: 2003-2020. 95 Points Robert Parker.

A more up to date tasting note from a vertical tasting of Valandraud
by "The Wine Cellar Insider":-

Filled with smoke, spice, truffle, crushed rock, dark plum and licorice-coated blackberries with Cuban cigar tobacco, this opulent, energetic, sensuous wine coats your palate with an abundance of sweet black cherry and bitter chocolate. The wine kept improving in the glass for close to 2 hours. It might have kept on improving, but I could not resist and finished it all. This is one of the top wines from 1995 from either bank. 96 Points.

Wine Cellar Insider (Tasted 12th July 2010).

Impromptu Sunday Bordeaux gathering at Ruth Chris Tysons Corner, VA (Ruth Chris Tysons Corner, VA): Always a crowd pleaser. Not much change in the past two years. Pop and pour, expressive nose, coffee, mocha, caramel. Excellent concentration and silky palate. Fully matured but will last for awhile. This and the 96 La Mondotte represent the best examples of matured garagiste movement wines.

11/22/2010 - JSHUFELT WROTE:95 Points
Decanted for 40 minutes before service. In the glass, dark reddish-orange with a garnet rim. Sexy aromatics of tobacco, chocolate, pine needles, and currants. On the palate, wide open for business, with a lush, velvety texture and a balanced mixture of black currants, tobacco, and complex minerality. No sign of tannins or harsh edges anywhere, yet no signs of breaking up over the two hours we spent leisurely consuming the bottle with dinner.
