Description

A legendary year for Beaucastel. Not currently available in the UK.

"We then moved to the 1981 Beaucastel, which represents the essence of beef blood, animal notes, and sweaty horse saddle. Wow! What an extraordinary wine. Many people think some of these aromas are related to brett, and there may be some brett in this wine, but I think it is primarily just super-concentrated, old vine Mourvèdre that has spent 28 years in the bottle. Still a dense dark plum color (much darker than the Rayas, which is 100% Grenache), it smells like fresh horse dung when first opened, but that blew off, leaving aged beef smells intermixed with blood, garrigue, earth, truffle, and leather. It is very full-bodied and stunningly complex, but boy, I can understand why some people might be repulsed by this style of wine. However, it is a great example of Beaucastel and of a Châteauneuf du Pape from the Mourvèdre-dominated school of winemaking."

Robert Parker: 96 points May 2009

"Poured at the "KFC at the Ledbury" soiree, at 30-years of age the Beaucastel '81 continues to delight, this being the finest bottle I have encountered. A blissful bouquet of blackcurrant, leather, bacon fat, Cepes and a touch of blueberry that is so remarkably youthful and vibrant and no, it had very little of the brettanomyces that this wine is infamous for. The palate does not disappoint: seamless tannins and an effortless sense of harmony, there is plenty of succulent black, peppery fruit to suggest that well kept bottles such as this will last another 10-15 years. This Chateauneuf-du-Pape deserves it lofty reputation."

Neal Martin: 96 points February 2011

"I have always liked the 1981 Beaucastel, especially the last few years it is drinking very well. The magnum I had last night - decanted for 4 hours - showed by far superior. The solid lush and also fresh fruit core amazed me. Powerful but in a way also modest with a great building intensively well flavored mid palate. Earthy notes with truffle and subtle garrigue with creamy spicy licorice. Great structure with balanced acidity and tannin. Long complex finish. Enough potential to age for another 1-3 decades..."
