Description

Well known chateau now in the Pessac-Leognan appellation which split from the Graves in the mid 1980's.
Robert Parker considers it to be the equivalent of a Fifth Growth.

The last surviving vineyard in the commune of Merignac.

The Bordeaux region of the Graves, situated just at the gates to the town of Pessac-Leognan, is considered as a historical birthplace of Bordeaux vineyards. Chateaux Haut Brion and Pape Clement are situated a few hundred metres from Picque Caillou and share a similar terroir - a good start.
The beautiful and classic chateau itself was built in the 1790`s.
In 1949, a Bordeaux negociant, Etienne Denis, aquired Picque Caillou and together with his son they enlarged the vineyard area to the present 20 hectares. 45% Cabernet Sauvignon, 45% Merlot, 10% Cabernet Franc
Vineyard surface area: 20 hectares (1ha for the white vine). Average age of vines - 30 years. Cropping at 30-40 hl/ha. Barrel aged 12-14 months in 1/3 new oak.

The 1983 vintage is in the shadow of its elder brother and although in a normal run of vintages 1983 would have been better respected, with the mythical 1982 coming on stream it suffered the same fate as 1962, 1971, 1979, and 2001.
