Description

A chance to compare and contrast three great expressions of Grenache from Clarendon Hills. The producer classifies Romas Grenache and Onkaparinga Grenache as a "Grand Cru" level in their rankings - one down from Astralis Syrah ("1er Grand Cru") and the same level as Piggott Range Syrah. The Blewitt Springs Grenache is labelled as a "Premier Cru".

Reviews:

Romas 2005:
Robert Parker’s Wine Advocate: 95 points
The 2005 Grenache Romas Vineyard delivers more complexity than the Onkaparinga, both aromatically and on the palate. An enticing perfume of damp earth, truffle, clove, black cherry, and blackberry is followed by a full-bodied, powerful, structured wine which will need a decade to reveal its full potential. Although it oozes with fruit and can be enjoyed now, it merits extended cellaring.

Onkaparinga 2007:
Robert Parker's Wine Advocate (Jay Miller): 93 points
My favorite of the 2007 Grenache cuvees is the 2007 Grenache Onkaparinga. Aside from being the most approachable, it has the most enticing perfume with its notes of underbrush, incense, lavender, black cherry and blackberry liqueur. Velvety but with some underlying tannin, it has succulent fruit, impeccable balance, and a lengthy finish.

Blewitt Springs 2007:
Jeremy Oliver: 95 points
An exceptionally deep, powerful grenache with drive, concentration and remarkable fruit purity. Its pristine, heady bouquet of high-toned floral notes and alluringly, deep-scented cherries, plums, spice and dark chocolate are backed by suggestions of cola and briar. Long and vibrant, with deliciously intense dark cherry/plum/blackberry fruit tightly knit with fine, grainy tannins, it finishes long and dry, brightly flavoured, fresh and savoury.
