Description

Clos des Papes Chateauneuf-du-Pape 1999 by Paul Avril Parker 94 points

Parker rates at 94 points and comments:
(2001)"The 1999 Chateauneuf du Pape was made from yields of 27 hectoliters per hectare, about one-half of the Bordeaux average, and one-third of what many Burgundy vineyards achieve. Reminiscent of a grand cru Corton, it offers abundant quantities of sweet cherry fruit intertwined with flowers and minerals. There is a certain earthy terroir character as well as copious amounts of red and black fruits, full body, good spice, and moderate tannin in the long, firm finish. This is a beautifully knit Chateauneuf du Pape".
(2003)"The 1999 needs 3-4 years of cellaring, and should keep for two decades. While the 1999 performed better than the 1998, it remains firm and closed, offering plenty of sweet kirsch and blackberry fruit, licorice, spice, and floral aromas. Structured, medium to full-bodied, and moderately tannic, it should be at its finest between 2006-2020. Very impressive"!

Equally impressed, JLL rates at **** and says:
"maturing, soft red. Smoky, still reserved bouquet, is stiff, shows a Mourvèdre licorice presence, latent herbs. Red fruits, tight-knit palate. Very closed. Good final acidity, and stylish in the making, lots of potential. Solid at heart, has gone dumb, but this has a lot of latent quality. Esp 2008-09 on. Can rate more highly than today. 2020-24 October 2005, Copenhagen Previously March 2005 ****(*) upright, Bordeaux inclined bouquet - black fruits, touch of well ingrained pepper, gamey from the Mourvèdre - attractive overall. Very harmonious start, tasty, the fruit is savoury, some jam content, a little suppleness and a lot of perfume and elegance. Very classy refinement. Fruit is juicy, tasty. Good now in its full early splendour. Also good from 2009 on with second phase extras developed. 2022-24. 14°5 March 2005
