Description

One bottle of this wine from one of the best domains in Chateauneuf-du-Pape. Average UK retail price £84.

Jancis Robinson: When to drink: 2005 to 2035.
Chocolate, hay, coffee, cooked red fruit, wonderfully nuanced and perfumed with great persistence. The tannin is just right – firm and supportive, but not too grainy. Plenty of alcohol on the finish, but it stays in harmony. Masterful. Richard Hemming MW. Tasted: 10-Oct-2017

Stephen Tanzer, International Wine Cellar, May 2009:
Good medium red. Wild aromas of raspberry, strawberry, licorice and leather (I thought "Bandol with a band-aid"); began a bit rude but grew cleaner in the glass. Supple and dense but at the same time vinous and juicy, with a very firm spine of acidity giving the middle palate excellent verve. The leather and meaty notes give a savory dryness to this firmly built and sharply delineated wine. Still needs time to unfold. Score: 93+

Wine Spectator score 96:
"Has a mature brick hint at the rim, but this is still very youthful, with an elegant, silky core of red and black currant fruit that holds the upper hand over the garrigue, graphite and licorice notes. The long, very fine-grained finish lets an alluring incense note peek in. A beauty, this is all about finesse and should cruise in the cellar. - 1998 Chateauneuf du Pape retrospective. Drink now through 2027. 9,915 cases made"

Wow! A complete surprise, really stunning. Just reminded me of Rayas. I have drunk and enjoyed Clos des Papes on many occasions and thoroughly enjoyed every bottles - without being wowed. This was different. As I opened it I was worried that it may be a little tired and past its best - absolutely not! The wine sang from the first sip through to the end. A really great wine. This has all the weight, richness and sweet fruit (damson, raspberry, strawberry) that one would expect but accompanied by a kind of ethereal luminosity and power that I have never seen from this producer before but did experience with a Rayas 2007 a year or so ago. This character is also similar to my experiences with Giacosa, different grape but same mix of lifted elegance power and fruit. It is complex and long. Drinking perfectly now but I suspect it will go on for many years.

I bought this bottle as part of a case from a reputable merchant and have stored it in a dark underground cellar since purchase. The bottle on sale is the one in the photographs and is in good condition as shown.
