CHRISTMAS SPECIAL.

THREE BOTTLES from perhaps the best known producer in this northern Rhone appellation.

Hereunder others have written about this particular 1994 wine :-

Winedoctor
(Thierry Allemand Cornas Reynard) Quite a dense colour, although a tawny-tinged maturing red. A lovely, expressive nose, with dense floral fruit. Good structure on the palate, tannic and somewhat backward. Creosote and coffee influenced fruit on a sweet, lifted palate. Very pure and a classic example. Not as mind-blowing as my last tasting two years ago, but still of very high quality. 17.5+ points. Chris Kissack

Tasted by slanum on 12/18/2008: Absolutely stunning. One of the most memorable wines I have ever tasted. Seriously, this is in the top 5. How Allemand accomplished this in an off vintage (judging by the efforts of other producers) escapes me. Words (my words anyway) can only fail to do this wine justice. From the first scent to the last drop I just kept thinking "Wow!" Yes, it was characteristically Syrah with untold depths of ripe olive, savory meat, leather, and fruit, but all to the nth degree. The only problem with this wine was that it didn't come in a magnum. The first and last bottle for me--if only I knew then what I know now.

(Thierry Allemand Cornas Reynard) This wine has a dense, solid purple hue. Wow - the nose is packed with intense, primary, youthful blackcurrant fruit. The palate follows on, with lots of powerful fruit, fortunately backed up by lots of structure - ripe tannins and strong acidity. Although lacking in complexity or interest at present, I'm sure this will develop with time. This is one of the most impressive bottles from this appellation I can ever recall - no wonder they command such a high price. 18.5+ points
