1 * 75cl The Ironstone Pressing 2002 GSM
1 * 75cl The Coppermine Road 2002 Cabernet Sauvignon
1 * 75cl The Custodian 'Deep Sand' 2002 Grenache (Part of the Three Soils selection)

The Ironstone Pressing 2002 GSM

McLaren Vale, Grenache 67% Shiraz 27% Mourvèdre 6%

The Story Behind The Name
Most of McLaren Vale’s acclaimed and historic vineyards are impregnated with ancient, decomposed laterite granite known as ironstone. Its extraordinary rusty red-brown colour is derived from the iron oxides present in the stone. The larger pieces were cleared from the vineyards in the late 1880’s and utilised in many of the buildings at d'Arenberg, most notably the old stables.

The Characteristics
On the nose we are struck by the typical dark fruits that drinkers of this wine have come to love and expect. Plums, mulberries, fresh soil and more developed peaty like notes are all apparent, with an underlying lick of exotic Indian spice. But, it is the irony, stone like character that gives away the vintage.

An abundance of fresh fruits on the palate marry well with the more complex characters of quince paste, cinnamon, nutmeg, star anise and earthy beetroot. Driving the core of the wine is that vintage trademark in the form of graphite and wet stone. This wine, while appearing open and generous already, will continue to age well thanks to the lively line of acidity and the abundance of fine gritty tannins.

The Coppermine Road 2002 Cabernet Sauvignon

100% McLaren Vale

The Story Behind The Name
Coppermine Road runs parallel to our very best Cabernet vineyard in McLaren Vale, just metres from the winery, cellar door and restaurant.

The Characteristics
The nose exhibits classic Cabernet aromatics of black currant leaf, violets and cigar box with an interesting twist of cooking spice and mustard seed.

These lovely savoury notes are followed through onto the palate but swept along by an underlying sweet blackcurrant and mulberry fruitiness that builds as the wine continues to evolve in your glass.

The initially cedary tannins, start early and give the wine an incredible line. An intriguing fennel note accompanies the chalky tannins that are picked up on the finish, which is long and lingering.

1 * 75cl The Custodian 'Deep Sand' 2002 Grenache (Part of the Three Soils selection)

The Custodian McLaren Vale Deep Sand. Deeper and more concentrated than the Loam wine, with meaty black currant, plum, black pepper and earthy vanilla bean notes, with a deep, but smooth finish.

100% McLaren Vale Grenache

The Story Behind The Name
During the vine pull scheme of the early 1980’s d’Arry Osborn refused to touch his old Grenache vineyards. When his son Chester started in the business as Chief Winemaker in 1984 he set about acquiring more old vine Grenache grapes and vineyards at a time when it was considered un-fashionable. Today d’Arenberg is the keeper of nearly one third of McLaren Vale’s old bush vine Grenache and has earned the title of ‘Custodian’ of the variety.

The Characteristics
The nose is full of berries with clear notes raspberry and blueberry with cherry and plum adding to the mix. With a few swirls the wine opens further to reveal earth and spice notes.

Vibrant and fresh red fruits form a beautiful, luscious fruit core with white pepper and cinnamon spices emerging on the back palate. There is an earthy feel to the wine with grippy, mineral fruit tannins providing a long finish.

The vintage is clearly reflected in the wine with ripe fruit characters well balanced with earth notes and layered secondary characters. The wine has the poise and structure to cellar well over the next decade.
