Description

3 perfect bottles (Nos. 6356, 6359 & 6365) of Domaine Le Clos du Caillou Chateauneuf du Pape Reserve 2001. One of the top Chateauneuf du Papes of 2001 and consistently rated 100 by Robert Parker.

Robert Parker 100: "As for the Châteauneuf du Papes, we were drinking mostly mature wines, with the youngest being the 2001 Clos du Caillou Réserve. One of the greatest Châteauneuf du Papes produced, the 2001 is the last wine made by Denis Vacheron before his tragic death in an automobile accident. While dominated by Grenache, it includes a higher percentage of Mourvèdre than most Châteauneuf du Papes (around 30%). It still boasts a deep ruby/purple hue as well as lots of structure, and tremendous density of black fruits, minerals, pepper, garrigue and spice. The wine continues to play it close to the vest, but massive concentration, elegance and overall purity and harmony are all present. It requires another 4-5 years of cellaring, and should easily last for three decades, an unusually long life for a Châteauneuf du Pape." Hedonist's Gazette Nov 2011

Robert Parker 100: "As frighteningly spectacular as the 2000 Chateauneuf du Pape Reserve Le Clos du Caillou was (I’ve drunk a half dozen or more bottles since my initial report), the 2001 Chateauneuf du Pape Reserve Le Clos du Caillou is one of the most monumental wines of this appellation I have ever tasted. A legendary effort that pays homage to the last vintage the late Jean-Denis Vacheron produced, it boasts an inky/purple color in addition to a terrific perfume of creme de cassis, kirsch, acacia flowers, melted licorice, and graphite. It possesses awesome purity as well as layers of concentration, yet a seamless integration of acidity, tannin, and alcohol. Spectacularly long (the finish lasts over 60 seconds), it cuts a broad swath across the palate, yet is remarkably light on its feet. This amazing effort, a blend of 45% Grenache, 40% Mourvedre, and 15% Syrah, is one of the strongest candidates for wine of the vintage in 2001. Anticipated maturity: 2005-2022."
