Description

Allen Meadows, Burghound (93 points, 2007!); Interestingly for an obviously ripe wine this remains cool and reserved with spiced wild berry fruit aromas that lead to sappy and distinctly earthy flavors that are robust and powerful with a sappy and seductive finish of considerable length. There is excellent mid-palate concentration and stylistically, this resembles the Suchots though here the wood is better integrated.

Nicolas Potel candidly describes the 2005 growing season as "basically perfect. We had a great and uniform flower set, which means that the grapes ripened uniformly as well. About the only aspect I wish was different is that the crop was a small one and thus there wasn't as much to purchase. And this definitely affected me because with very few exceptions, every wine we made was from purchased fruit, not wine. As to the wines, 2005 is the best vintage since I started in 1997 and by a fair margin. It's a classic vintage as well with suave and generous flavors yet the wines are very precise and best of all, they reflect their underlying terroirs even better than they did in 2004. But the most interesting aspect of the vintage is the length as the average wine is much more persistent then usual. Moreover, they will be true long distance runners yet because of the generosity of the mid-palates, they will be approachable young." Potel said that because the phenolics were so ripe he did very little destemming and in many cases, none at all. Overall, this is an impressive set of wines and I have to agree with Potel in that 2005 is the best vintage that I have ever seen from him.

David Schildknecht for Robert Parker's The Wine Advocate, 95 Points in June 2007; Red and black currant, purple plum, ginger spice, star anise and lily inform the mouth-watering nose of Potel’s 2005 Echezeaux. Meaty richness and pulverized stone mineral character join an abundance of juicy fruit in the mouth, and a huge level of concentration proves compatible with a finish of utmost clarity, poise and elegance. This vibrant, finely tannic, superbly subtle wine goes well beyond the norm for its appellation. While it might well make old bones it may remain hard to resist even short term. Happily, at over 300 eventual cases, this is one of Potel’s larger lots.

Stephen Tanzer, International Wine Cellar, 93 points 2007; Bright red-ruby color. Spicy black cherry, minerals, nutty oak and a whiff of violet on the nose. Distinctly black fruit in character, with suggestions of minerals and licorice-this is hardly the only 2005 from this vineyard that's showing its dark side early on. Intense finish features substantial tannins that currently cut off the wine's fruit.
