Much of the 1821 vintage was earmarked for Napoleon, while serving out his exile on St Helena. Guarded by 3000 soldiers on a wind-swept Atlantic Island is enough to drive the most pious to drink, so it is not surprising that records suggest that 30 bottles were drunk per month.This was not a case of beggars can't be choosers, as this was and continues to be one of South Africa's finest sweet wines and although he may have had many faults - his taste was outstanding.Having died in 1821 Napoleon never had an opportunity to drink this vintage but instead that privilege is now entrusted to a Dreweatts client. With only a handful of bottles remaining in existence this is an extraordinary opportunity to own this important piece of vinous history.
