Description

Wine Advocate # 129
Jun 2000 Robert Parker 100 Drink: 2005 - 2050
The 1990 La Chapelle is the sexy and opulent. I had the 1990 at the Jaboulet tasting, and again out of a double magnum three months ago. On both occasions it was spectacular, clearly meriting a three-digit score. The modern day equivalent of the 1961, it deserves all the attention it has garnered.

The color remains an opaque purple, with only a slight pink at the edge. Spectacular aromatics offer up aromas of incense, smoke, blackberry fruit, cassis, barbecue spice, coffee, and a touch of chocolate. As it sits in the glass, additional nuances of pepper and grilled steak emerge. There is extraordinary freshness for such a mammoth wine in addition to abundant tannin, an amazing 60-second finish, and a level of glycerin and thick, fleshy texture that have to be tasted to be believed.

Despite its youthfulness, the 1990 La Chapelle is lovely to drink, although it will be even better with another 5-6 years of cellaring; it should age for 35-40+ years. Anticipated maturity: 2005-2050

Decanted for four hours with rigorous aeration to open it up, this is undoubtedly the finest ’90 Chapelle I have tasted. Here it has a sublime bacon fat nose that develops more milk chocolate aromas with time in the glass. Brilliant definition and lift, positively shags your olfactory senses into submission. The full-bodied palate is smooth and seductive on the entry and far more open and approachable than previously encountered. Very fine tannins, touches of dark chocolate, less tannic than before with a lithe finish. Finally, at my fourth bottle, I understand why this is so revered, but that has much to do with the fact that I had complete control in preparing the bottle. Drink 2010-2030+ Tasted December 2008.

Neal Martin 95 Drink 2010 - 2030
This has a more Rhone-like nose, blackberry, tar, kirsch and animal fur. Full-bodied, tannic with very ripe, slightly savoury (bacon fat) and spice box. A little more forward that other bottles I have encountered, but I maintain that the ’89 has better balance. It is just too serious for its own good, whilst the ’89 has more joie-de-vivre (a view I uphold about Chateau Montrose.) A touch of dark chocolate on the finish. More impressive than outright pleasurable. Drink 2010-2030+ Tasted January 2008.
