Description

ABV - 15.6%

The name of ‘Armagh’ was bestowed by the original Irish settlers who arrived in 1849, and named the lush rolling hill after their homeland.
The vineyard was planted by Jim Barry in 1968 and yields less than two tonnes per acre. The soil is sandy-gravel and receives an average rainfall of 24 inches per year. The vineyard lies on a north-west facing slope which acts as a natural sun trap, ensuring the fruit is always fully ripened when picked.

2006 was a very successful vintage, producing high quality wines. Conditions during the growing season were favourable with good winter and spring rains. While January was quite hot, the vines remained in
excellent condition due to mild conditions in the preceding months.
Vintage started quite early, with most fruit picked by the end of March.

Winemaking Notes
The 2006 Armagh is dense and purple in colour. It is an elegant and aristocratic kaleidoscope of aromas, an abundance of fruit flavours; blackberry, mulberry and blueberry with supporting complexity of mint, eucalyptus, rhubarb, turkish delight and cinnamon.
The palate is a rich tapestry of enjoyment and fulfillment with flavours of raspberry, strawberry and boysenberry with the closing argument of star anise, rosemary, spearmint and clove.

This wine hand crafted with the Jim Barry philosophy to be enjoyed upon release but demands a long sleep in the cellar to allow the wine to demonstrate all that it beholds.

20/20

Announced on the 17th of May 2011, the 2006 Armagh received the rare 20/20 accolade from wine writer Matthew Jukes who announced his 100 Best Australian Wines at a special function in London’s West End.

Jukes was glowing in his praise for the Jim Barry Shiraz portfolio but was especially excited by the Armagh.

“With more truffles and well-hung game than a Piemontese banquet and so much latent power that it makes me feel bashful to even type its name, 2006 The Armagh is a perfect expression of its site and it is also an awe-inspiring encapsulation of the paradise that is the Clare Valley. For me this means that it is a rare 20/20 wine,” Jukes said.

Winemaker Peter Barry said he was “tremendously excited” about the award.

“The Armagh is one of only two wines given a perfect score (the other being the 2006 Penfolds Grange) by one of the world’s leading critics who tastes more than 15,000 wines a year. It is the equivalent in the UK of a 100 point score from US critic Robert Parker….or making a century at Lords.”
