Description

A magnum of this champagne which has been lying in my cellar for over 20 years. The bottle on sale is the one shown in the photographs. There is a small amount of scuffing on the front label, and more on the back.

Some tasting notes:

(from magnum). Not surprisingly this is markedly more youthful than the same wine in 750 ml format but as it should it shares many of the same characteristics that include the brioche, baked apple and prominent yeast elements, but the marmalade character is at this point only a whisper. There is also a better sense of vibrancy to the wonderfully complex flavors where the supporting mousse remains firm and fine, all wrapped in an utterly delicious and, again like the 750 ml version, saliva-inducing finale. While I don’t believe there is any reason to continue to cellar this beauty in terms of potential development, neither is there any need to drink up sooner than later. Lovely juice that should continue to hold well in magnum format. Drink now+. 96

Rich, lush aromas of dried fruit and citrus marmalade, this is Champagne at its most opulent. Honeyed and round on the palate, with fine acidity keeping it focused. Gorgeous now, yet will age well.--Krug vertical. Drink now through 2015. 94
Bruce Sanderson, Wine Spectator (Jun 30, 00), June 2000

Made from an approximate mix of 20% pinot Meunier, 50% pinot noir and 30% chardonnay though the percentages vary from vintage to vintage. While the '89 is not a current release, I happened to have the opportunity to taste itagain in August so I included the note here: a positively spectacular nose that is now fully mature and quite yeasty with realbreadth and depth leads to rich, fresh, sweet and intense flavors that also seems to have loads of barely concealed reservesof power and depth, finally explode on the hugely persistent finish. I've had better Champagnes but not many and this is a seriously impressive effort that can be drunk now or held for years to come. 96/now+
