Robert Parker has gradually been increasing his rating of the Janasse Vieilles Vignes 1998 and in his latest tasting notes of CNP 1998s in June 2010,he awarded the wine 97 Points.


The 1998 Janasse Chateauneuf du Pape Cuvee Vieilles Vignes is another exquisite effort that rivals some of the finest Chateauneuf made in the last decade.It boasts fabulous intensity,explosive aromatics and depth,more tannin and structure than its siblings,and a seemingly more impenetrable mid-palate.However,the wine has huge weight,superb concentration,and much of the character of the Cuvee Chaupin,yet it is simply bigger,thicker,denser,and more tannic.It requires 4-5 years of cellaring and should keep for two decades or more.

It is a great Chateauneuf du Pape,with power,elegance,immense purity,a majestic multi-layered feel in the mouth,and a finish that lasts for 40+ seconds.Although it remains unevolved and somewhat grapy,everything is present for a fabulous evolution of two decades or more. In contrast,the darker,purple-colored Janasse Vieilles Vignes is inky garnet/ruby/purple to the edge,displays classic floral creme de cassis notes,with black raspberry and black berry.A touch of tar,truffle,smoke,and earth are also present in this full-bodied,beautifully delineated wine,which exhibits much more definition and has lost the almost overwhelming grapiness of its youth.This wine is just entering its plateau of maturity,where it should last for another 10-15 years.
