Description

Mas de Daumas Gassac is a French wine producer from the wine region Languedoc, classified as Vin de Pays de l'Hérault due to its use of grape varieties outside specifications of its AOC. The winery, producing both white and red wine, is located in the south of France, in the commune of Aniane. Despite its modest designation and location, the vineyard has received widespread acknowledgement, described by The Times to taste like a “Latour” and by the French gastronomic guide GaultMillau as the "Lafite Rothschild of the Languedoc-Roussillon", it is frequently referred to as the Grand cru of the Languedoc.

Michael Broadbent gives this ***** rating it the second best wine of 23 1982's he tried in a 1988 tasting.

Beautiful developed bouquet. The taste is ripe and complex with spices and black and red berries. Soft tannin and bitterness and elegant oak. Still going strong and no hurry drinking this wine. Give it enough air.

Magnum. Immensely impressive. Almost black (still!), amazing nose, rocks and iron, soaring and rich Cabernet fruit; very powerful and rich palate, massive tannins, a bruiser, charm not exactly its forté. Will last for decades, especially in this format.

Mas de Daumas Gassac 1982 (Vin de Pays de Herault) – Served blind. Intense ruby red. Lovely nose with cherry, was, some eucalyptus and herbs. Big bodied, great structure. Loads of upfront red fruit and with loads of smooth tannins. Some dried herbal touches on the midpalate. A real delight to drink. 90 points.
Wow, this is goooood stuff! Amazingly youthful for its age, and there is room for improvement (IMHO). Better than most ’82 Bordeaux we tried at the same tasting; worth checking out if you can find it!
