Description

2 bottles of the rare and delicious 2005 Moulin a Vent Vielle Vigne 2005 from Hubert Lapierre. As in Burgundy, 2005 was an exceptional vintage in Beaujolais and wines from old vines (this cuvee comes from vines over 70 years old) in good areas ended up with the structure to age and develop gracefully for a number of years. Indeed Lapierre recommends leaving this wine for 4-6 years from vintage before opening.

I have a case of this wine and recently removed it from bond - it is now stored in my cellar at home and I am selling a few bottles to diversify. Rest assured I intend to drink at least half the case myself!

A tasting note from last weekend:

Deep ruby. Very little fading on the rim. First impressions are of black cherries underscored with a huge minerality. In the mouth this is delightfully fresh, elegant and poised with a fine vein of tannin and a dark stony character. The cherries and other dark fruit appear here too. Served blind I'd have put this down as a Savigny or similar.

Importer's Note:

'The wines of Moulin-à-Vent are the longest-lived of the Beaujolais crus. In fine vintages such as 2005, outstanding examples of the genre are structured and need two years in bottle for their scents and flavours to open. Produced on soils that are rich in iron, time delivers delightful nuances that broaden and develop further after three or four years. The multi award-winning Hubert Lapierre produces two cuvées of Moulin à Vent. His ‘regular’ bottling is consitently good but this old vines cuvée, made from gnarled, low-yielding vines of more than 70 years of age, is nothing less than exceptional. As suggested above, this is a Beaujolais that will repay keeping. Although rather restrained at the moment this is a serious, layered Moulin-à-Vent that shows potential for developing into a deeply flavoured, Burgundian-style Beaujolais.'
