Description

I currently have for sale two Magnums of 1978 Mouton Rothschild, which come from the same cellar as the 1966 Latour and 1966 Mouton I currently have listed.

Whilst the main picture shows three Magnums (all 1978's) I intend to keep the one on the right), the two I have for sale are listed individually so please see my other listings (by clicking on my username above).

Please note that there were only 3,170 Magnums and Jeroboams produced.

It would appear that this is vintage that has developed with age given the three revised scores as time has progressed.

The 1978 is a vegetal, cedary, coffee, and berry-scented Mouton. It is pleasant, but lacks the concentration and depth expected of a first-growth. The wine is medium-bodied, with a slight greenness to its curranty, earthy flavours, and moderately astringent, bitter tannin in the finish. It is a pleasant wine that is unlikely to develop additional complexity or richness. Anticipated maturity: Now. Last tasted 10/97

In many ways the 1978 Mouton is nearly as disappointing as the 1979. Medium ruby-coloured, with a straightforward bouquet of green coffee beans, dried berry fruit, and new oak, this compact, angular, austere wine is lacking concentration, and appears to be dropping its fruit more quickly than its brutal tannin. It is a dubious effort, particularly for a first-growth. Last tasted, 6/93.

Michael Broadbent:

A much plummier and less decisive colour than its peers, and quicker maturing. Nose a bit disappointing; chunky, cheesy, nice fruit but lacking excitement. Most recently, though deep, fully matured and a bit week at the rim; low-keyed, crumbly, brambly fruit; on the sweet side, medium weight, soft, easy pleasant but no great future. March 1989.

More recently:

Lacking the usual panache though quite stylish and drinking agreeably. April 2004.
