Description

6 bottles of superb portugese red from the excellent 2004 vintage. Quinta do Passodouro is considered to be among the very best examples of Portugese still red wine. Purchased on release and stored with The Wine Society before being moved to EHD in Weybridge.

Tasting note: Youthful and fresh in colour, still with blackcurrant hue, this wine has vibrant sweet fruit and a beautiful floral fragrance. There is some warmth and spice on the ripe palate but a lovely freshness too. The perfume is of flowers, notably violets, and the wine is elegant and balanced with ripe fruit, a solid structure, and a clean cut finish.

Grape varieties: Touriga nacional, tinta roriz, touriga franca.

Background:The Quinta do Passadouro has 18 hectares of vineyards in the heart of the Port country. The estate is owned by the Bohrmann family, who also have holdings in Burgundy, and production was formerly sold to Niepoort. Since 1999, the wine has been made by the dynamic young team of Jorge Serodio Borges, former winemaker at Niepoort, and his winemaker wife Sandra Tavares.

Viticulture: The vineyards are of schist, which encourages deep roots, on steep terraces at between 100 and 300 metres above sea level, above the Pinhao river valley. They compromise a proportion of 60-year-old, high-density mixed varietal plantings with some newer lower density plantings. Green harvesting takes place in summer, and the grapes are ultimately hand picked, yielding about 25 hl/ha.

Vinification: The grapes were sorted and de-stemmed, lightly crushed, then foot trodden in old granite lagares. The wine then underwent 10 days' temperature controlled maceration on the skins, after which it was basket pressed before maturation in French oak barriques, around 50% new, for 12 months.
