Description

1981 Grange
Winemaker John Duval called the 1981 a big, tannic Grange. It is just that, a very powerful, inky, purple-colored wine that is still almost primary and unevolved in its surprising youthfulness. This formidably endowed, broodingly backward, thick, full-bodied, muscular wine has a boatload of chocolate-infused plum, caramel, and cassis flavors. With high tannin, huge grip, and some propensity toward austerity, this is a monster Grange that may not totally assimilate the high levels of tannin, but there are plenty of reasons to be optimistic about its future.

The 1981 Grange is a blend of 89 percent Shiraz and 11 percent Cabernet Sauvignon from the Kalimna and other Barossa vineyards, Magill Estate and the Modbury Vineyard in the Adelaide Plains. A warm to hot, drought-affected summer followed by a normal vintage. Maturation in new American oak hogsheads for eighteen months. Alcohol 12.70% Acidity 6.20g/L pH 3.58

Deep crimson brick red. Liquorice, dried fig, baked red fruit aromas. Coffee chocolate oak precede a plump, juicy and straightforward palate. A powerfully concentrated and muscular wine with chocolate raisin fruit, earthy nuances and a touch of American oak. The tannins are soupy and dense and build up very chalky and dry at the finish.
Winemaker comments by Don Ditter: Dense purple/red in colour. Smoky meaty/spicy aromas and some toasty oak characters, also showing vanilla and coffee overtones. A combination of rich, fleshy, chocolaty and smoky flavours are balanced with pronounced tannins and length, resulting in a wine of immense concentration and powerful structure

1982 Grange

Will last for ages. ***** Michael Broadbent

The 1982 is another superb example of that. One of the jammiest, most precocious Granges when it was released, it has never gone through a closed stage and continues to drink beautifully. A full-bodied, opulent Grange, it reveals an inky/purple color to the rim as well as a beautiful nose of crushed blueberries, blackberries, smoke, toast, roasted herbs, and road tar. This dense, plush, expansive, seamless, seductive 1982 has not changed much since I had it nearly a decade ago.
(6/ 2009) 97/100 Robert Parker

Fruit from Kalimna, Barossa Valley, Clare Valley, Magill, Modbury. A very good vintage in South Australia with a mild growing season which ended with a burst of warm weather. 94% Shiraz, 6% Cabernet Sauvignon. 18 months in new American oak hogsheads. pH 3.39, TA 6.9 g/l. Gorgeous core of fruit. Very complex but slightly funky. Dry finish. They call it '82 char'. Red currants? Medicinal.
