Description

THE ESTATE: The Casanova di Neri farm began in 1971 when Giovanni Neri bought a large estate within the territory of Montalcino. Over the years their continuing goal has been the search for and purchasing of land which they believe to be optimal for growing high quality grapes. The result is that today they have about 36 hectares of vineyards divided between four quite distinct areas: il Pietradonice in Castelnuovo dell'Abate, le Cetine in Sant'Angelo in Colle, il Cerretalto and il Fiesole near the farmhouse of the same name facing Montalcino. Recent accolades include a perfect WS 100-point score for the 2001 Brunello di Montalcino Cerretalto and WS Wine of the Year honors for the 2001 Brunello di Montalcino Tenuta Nuova.
VINIFICATION: The grapes are hand harvested in September from the Pietradonice vineyard. The vineyard has a marl like soil and is situated 275 metres above sea level in the Montalcino area. Maceration and fermentation takes place; 18 days for the Sangiovese and 16 days for the Cabernet Sauvignon. The wine is then blended and aged for a total of 18 months in 225 litre French oak barrels. Only 6998 bottles of this wine are annually produced.
TASTING NOTES: The first release from Casanova di Neri’s new Cabernet Sauvignon vineyard in Castelnuova dell’Abate in Montalcino. Pietradonice is a unique vineyard. Special attention has been paid to agronomic management and planting demsity and the vineyard benefits from a unique microclimate and a particular marl like soil. The results are astonishing. Pietradonice has a deep red colour, particular richness in taste, density and smooth tannins with a sweet and very long finish.
