Description

The lot consists of three bottles of vintage Barossa Valley Shiraz:-

One bottle of Peter Lehmann's 1990 Stonewell Shiraz.
One bottle of Hardy's 1991 E & E Black Pepper Shiraz.
One bottle of St.Hallett's 1990 Old Block Shiraz.

Having initially been stored in an underground cellar, all bottles have damp stains, tears, wine rack nicks and small bits of label missing (see photographs). However since purchase, the wine storage conditions have been excellent and despite being over 20 years old,all the wine levels are still into neck.

Twenty years ago,Robert Parker had not discovered Australian wine, (that happened in the mid-nineties).So I have no tasting notes from him,and the only indication that I can give you of the quality of these wines is to quote what the producers state on the back labels and CellarTracker tasting notes:-

"The first ever Shiraz to be awarded the prestigeous Adelaide trophy, the 1990 Stonewell was made from old vine Shiraz, dry grown in the Greenock,Marananga,Segersdorf and Moppa districts of the Barossa Valley. The splendid 1990 vintage has produced a powerful red wine of exceptional richness and complexity.A long cellaring life is assured and decanting prior to serving is recommended as a crust has formed in the bottle".

Stonewell Shiraz 1990 back label.

"If I would give points only for the nose, the wine would easily earn 100 Points. What a beauty, with unbelievable complexity and elegance.Essential oils are mixed with blackberries, mint, blackcurrant, cherries, dark chocolate and so on,and so on.A noble coolness, very smooth tannins are linked with great structure. The essential notes of black pepper, laurels, cinnamon and nutmeg are built together with the fruit and soft tannins.I became addicted to this wine, but it was the first and last bottle".
(96 Points).

MQuentel. (Tasting note on 1991 E & E Black Pepper.CellarTracker. 17/7/2011).

"The selection of fruit for the Old Block 1990 Shiraz was made from some of the oldest blocks still under cultivation in the Barossa and Eden Valleys. The age of these classic old Shiraz vines is approximately 100 years.Fruit from these deep-rooted,established vines consistently produce outstanding full-bodied traditional dry red. This wine exhibits genuine Shiraz flavour and character and will improve with further bottle development".
