Description

An "outstanding" Napa Cabernet from an excellent, rather dry, year.
As Robert Parker wrote in the Wine Buyers Guide 6th edition (2002)
The 1996 Cabernet Sauvignon Reserve may be no better than the Oakville, but it is made in a slightly different style. The color is opaque purple, and the wine reveals more vanillin, a touch of mint, and plenty of black currant fruit in its moderately intense aromatics. Some of the vintage's dry tannin (from this year's stressed vineyard conditions) is present in the wine's finish. A more stylish, restrained, less exuberant example than the 1996 Oakville, it is an outstanding offering that should be consumed between 2002-2025."

He rated it a 92 pointer.

Today, my wife and I just opened another bottle. Clearly changes, but all for the better.Fruit still dominant. Now mature with soft tannins and really quite delicious. Will go well with my lamb shanks tonight. Open half an hour before and follow the changes in the glass. Rather more Bordeaux than new world. In a good place as they say. Will last until 2025 and probably soften the tannins more.

Had last glasses 4 hours after opening. A different wine; younger, fuller, and a long aftertaste. RP is right.

So, if so good, why sell? Good question but not because unhappy with the wine. Just too many wines in my cellar.
