Description

This was a much fruitier wine in its youth but is an interesting example of how those Australian fruit bombs age. Well, in my opinion.
Some Cellar tracker notes:
1998 Torbreck The Steading (Australia, South Australia, Barossa, Barossa Valley) 29/03/2012 gbm 93

Color: Cloudy, reddish purple. Lots of very fine sediment in the wine.
Nose: Wow! Cherries. Fruit. Very strong. Some cigar or earth.
Taste: Wow again! Very little fruit. Lots of pepper and spice. Earth. Very smooth tannins and a decent bit of acid.
Overall: Really enjoyed this wine. Probably past its peak, so drink up. It would have been interesting to try in its younger days, but I really like it now.

Very fine wine. Leaner and higher acid than the 1997 vintage, this is a gamey and herbal grenache dominant style. Less ripe raspberries, fresh cigar, leather, earth and dried flowers on the nose.Certainly tannic and acid in nature, this wine has excellent concentration and a nice poise about it - not a blockbuster, but a well proportioned wine in a refined style. Very enjoyable. On balance, this wine may have been more enjoyable in its juicy youth, but it certainly has transformed into a wine of considerable interest to my palate. This wine is not drying out and will continue to positively evolve in a cool cellar.
