Description

Tua Rita "Redigraffi" is, just about, still one of Italy's superbly kept Supertuscan secrets. While the term Supertuscan may be felt by many as becoming over used, or even cliched, with this wine, I feel, the cap (or should I say 'cork' ?) really does fit. It is a truly Super, world class, Tuscan wine.

Made entirely from Merlot, Redigaffi is a breathtaking, iconic wine.... The...vineyards are planted to ensure low yields and the greatest quality of the grapes. Extra long maceration with the skins and manual, frequent punch downs.....allow for Redigaffi’s outstanding concentration and complexity. The wine is matured on the lees for eighteen months in French oak barrels and bottled without fining or filtration. THE FINAL WINE IS THE FLAGSHIP WINE OF THE "TUA RITA" ESTATE.

This brief description from a prominent source is promising indeed. But then we move onto the 2013 vintage, which is the vintage I am selling here:

2013 was awarded 99 Points by James Suckling - '2013 Redigaffi is amazing. One of the best wines of Italy in 2013 vintage?’ J.S;

"One of the top three Merlots in the World" - Isa Bal, Master Sommeler of The Fat Duck Restaurant;

"Compelling .....Full body with extremely thick, silky tannins and a long, flavorful finish. This is layered and so structured, with fabulous length and density. Savory. Chocolate powder at the end. This needs at least three or four years of bottle age. A triumph for the vintage. Pure merlot.” - Vinous - Antonio Galloni;

The Redigaffi 2013 (and various other vintages of this astounding elixir) is regularly quoted, in the highest of circles, as being the only true, serious contender for position of King against Masseto, that hallowed beacon of Merlots, once thought untouchable. (Masseto, by the way, has more than twice the production, and is about four times the price on release...). Redigaffi very often scores in the mid- to high- 90's by a host of trusted commentators, and has twice in its relatively short life, been awarded the near-mythical score of 100 points (in 1997 and 2000).

And the list goes on and on. I have edited some reviews and notes slightly, not to embellish them (if anything, the result is the opposite) but to avoid the ridiculous lengths of some of the praise, and also to avoid repetition of superlatives!! Can I suggest the brief use of a Search Engine, to uncover the swathes of compliments that almost hold this wine aloft as though floating on clouds of praise.
