2002 Domaine Alain Hudelot Noellat Vougeot 1er Cru "Petits Vougeot"

I was puzzled for years as to why this vineyard did not seem to live up to its potential. After all, it is located directly below Musigny, and immediately adjacent to Clos Vougeot. The wine from here was always a bit rustic, but this puzzled me. Well, no more. Thanks to the excellent vineyard work of Pierre Nawrocki, this is now exactly what you would expect. It is a bit more masculine than Musigny, and not as fine, but still shows some of that elegance and finesse, combined with a bit more firmness. (Keith Wollenberg, K&L Burgundy Buyer, 08/04) 88-91 Points from Allen Meadows, who says: "This was one of the last wines to finish its malo and the hardening effects of the gas are still present as it’s edgy, awkward and disjointed today. The flavors are ripe, firm and robust with excellent complexity and I suspect that once this sorts itself out, it will be as impressive as the Charmes, if entirely different in character."
